Why Collect Data?
Some beaches have efforts in keeping beaches clean like trash and recylce bins, others do not. By collecting data we can see if these efforts are working and if efforts needs to be made.
How To Collect Data
To Collect Data, we will clean a beach for one hour and see what we find. Then, we will record what we have found and how much items were found. This is the best method because it is the safest way to help clean the beach while cleaning the beach.
Analyzing Data
By looking at what was collected, we can have an idea of the impact it is making towards the beach and marine life. We can also se what efforts is needed to be taken to help protect the beach.
Sample Data Sheet
DATA COLLECTED 2016
Trash Collected at Haleiwa Beach Park
What Does This Data Tell Us?
This data tells us that Cleaning efforts every week does reduce the litter amount but, trash is still being left behind and in fair numbers. There are trash cans near the site, but only near showers and bus stops. What we could do is, put more trash cans on the site, possibly near where people set up. We could also put resycling bins out so that we can recylce those bottles and cans.
Trash Collected at Mokuleia
What Does This Data Tell Us?
This data tells us that Cleaning efforts every week does reduce the litter amount and not a lot of trash is being left behind. In some locations there is a trash can and recyling bin at the entrance so that visitors may put dispose of their trash properly. But, in other locations there is not and a fair amount of trash is being left behind at the entrance. What we could do is we could put trash bins and recycling bins at the entrances where there is not, this way visitors may continue too dispose of their trash properly.
Trash Collected at Barber's Point
What Does This Data Tell Us?
This data tells us that Cleaning efforts every week does reduce the litter amount but, trash is still being left behind and in fair numbers. There are trash cans everywher on the site. Because the trash cans are not working, what we could do is post up signs to raise awareness of the effects of littering to the beach and marine life.
